Early Years Curriculum
Our curriculum is underpinned by the Early Years Statutory Framework which sets out what should be taught in school based settings.
The overarching principles are:
- Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured
- Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
- Children learn and develop well in enabling environments with teaching and support from adults, who respond to their individual interests and needs and help them to build their learning over time.
- Children benefit from a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers.
- Importance of learning and development, children develop and learn at different rates.
The framework details seven areas of learning and development:
The Three Prime Areas:
- Communication and Language
- Personal, Social and Emotional
- Physical
The Four Specific Areas:
- Mathematics
- Literacy
- Expressive Arts and Design
- Understanding the World
At Chailey St Peters, the curriculum is delivered through both adult led and child initiated activities which are carefully planned for and resourced to ensure children have opportunities to learn and develop in all areas described above. They are observed carefully in their play so next steps can be planned for ensuring all children make progress. Teachers and support staff provide suggestions and resources over time which make the learning more challenging. They use new vocabulary naturally and repeatedly, so children use and learn those words.
